Pactolus 2017

Thursday 6 - Sunday 9 July 2017

You will all know that I am a traditionalist and one of the longest traditions in our Club`s glorious 125 years is the Pactolus Race & Rally.

The first event was held back in 1965 when Hermione Lady Colwyn got together with her friends at SRF in Fecamp. The tradition was born. The French sailed to the Isle of Wight & then on to Shoreham. Here a Supper was held followed by a race together back to Fecamp with a further Dinner of Celebration. In those days Hermione presented each Skipper with a momento. I still have my paper knife in use. The weekend was named The Pactolus after her yacht which is still afloat down in the Solent.

Traditions take some time to build up and can so easily be lost when memories and enthusiasm fade. So I am determined that this years Pactolus will be one of the very best. This cannot happen without your support so what is on offer and why should you join in?

On Thursday 6th of July we will have a Supper at Shoreham with the French. The next morning-bright and early-we set sail for France. The course will follow a similar route to the Royal Escape Race and full details will be made available in the near future.

At Fecamp we will be guests of the Town and SRF with free moorings. The Club will be open to welcome us and don't forget their tradition of kissing and shaking hands with all in the bar when you arrive. I am told this is to avoid wall flowers?

In the evening Dominique is organising a Celebration Banquet. This is for the 52nd Pactolus; Our Club`s 125th; Not forgetting our late Admiral who so much a part of the close link between us over so many years. We have been promised "a Momento" by SRF and for our part each Skipper will receive a small gift - as is the tradition. Cups will be presented in France with much frolicsome jollity.

I have been asked by our Sailing Captain to take on the organisation. I need your support. To this effect would you please let me know your intention to join us so that catering can be of the very best. Here I must have numbers for the Supper on the 6th and The Banquet on the 8th. If numbers warrant this could be held at The Casino where a deal has been done on a Menu Gastronomique. This can be done by good old telephone on 01273 453966; writing on the Rally Board in the Club; or, if you must, by email on djskinner@ntlworld.com
