We are pleased to announce that W Stirland, based in Chichester, has been engaged as the contractor to undertake the construction of our new £4.2 million clubhouse and facilities.
Work has begun on site and will be completed by June 2020. Our existing clubhouse, which has been our home since 1950, will then be demolished to enable the building of planned flood defences by Adur and Worthing District Council.
Sussex Sailability, a charity that enables people with disabilities to sail, has been thriving at Sussex Yacht Club since 2001. Over the years, various modifications have been made to the existing yacht club building to allow access and changing facilities, however retro-fitting an old building has its limitations.
Therefore, our membership decided that the new building should be specifically designed to allow sailors with disabilities the very best possible sailing experience in the UK. They have worked closely with the membership of Sussex Sailability, the charity Changing Rooms and specialist architects to ensure that the new facilities fully meet everyone’s needs to enable their independence and dignity.
Terry Kinch, our Commodore said, “I am pleased to announce that we have appointed W Stirland as the contractors for this flagship development. It will be an asset for everyone in Shoreham to be proud of and we are looking forward to welcoming the community in to enjoy what we have to offer here.
“It’s exciting that we will be providing the very best facilities in the country for sailors who have disabilities. We hope that our focus on accessibility will encourage many more people to try the sport and to enjoy the freedom of being out on the water.”
Chris Hodge from Sussex Sailability said, “We are delighted that work is beginning on the excellent new facilities. The old clubhouse isn’t really disability friendly; despite everyone’s best efforts and the adaptions that have been made.
“The limited space means that some people can’t change out of their wet clothes at the club and have to go straight home, which is uncomfortable at best and means they miss out on the important social side of sailing.
“So, it’s fantastic that we will finally be able to have full independent access to the sport. It’s great to see that Sussex Yacht Club is leading the way and firmly putting Shoreham on the map for its inclusivity and positive approach to the needs of those living with disabilities.”
