Funeral 23 May 2013
It is with great sadness that I have to confirm the tragic death of my friend and SYC member, Ian Harber. Ian was an active member of SYC and had just departed on a solo navigation of the UK on his new boat “Misue”.
Having recently retired from the merchant navy, serving as a Chief Engineer for Shell on their gas and oil tankers, Ian had been looking forward to the circumnavigation of the UK and had purchased “Misue” for that purpose. He had spent the past months equipping and testing his boat for a departure date in April 2013.
It is a bitter irony, that after only three weeks of his adventure, having reached the island of Lundy in the Bristol Chanel, it was not a sailing accident, but suspected carbon monoxide poisoning that was the cause of his death.
Ian was co-owner of Flying Fish, and Gee n Tee before that, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was respected for his considerable knowledge of every working part of the boat, his safety awareness, and his quiet, but friendly persona.
Ian leaves two daughters, Kirsten and Stephanie, his mother Mary, his sister Christine and husband Tony. Our deepest sympathies are extended to them all.
The funeral will take place at the Downs Crematorium, Bear Road on the 23rd May 2013 at 12.45. This will be followed by a gathering of family, friends and those who wish to attend at the Sussex Yacht Club at 2.00pm.
