We are sorry to announce the sad passing of Susan Stevens, who died peacefully on Tuesday 9th March, on her 86th birthday.

Sue went in to Kingsland House about 18 months ago, and was together in the care home with her husband Roddy.  After a short illness, she died peacefully with 4 care home staff by her side.

Her son, Russell had visited her over the weekend and had taken Roddy in to see her which gave her comfort as she smiled and was happy to see him.

Sue was a well loved, life member at the Club and our thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones at this time.

A message from her son, Chris Stevens:

The Sussex Yacht Club was a huge part of Mum’s life – she was a member since the late 1950’s and crewed hornets with their sliding seats in the early days. She married Roddy who was a keen sailor at the club. Raising a family, all 3 boys, Michael, Russell and Christopher were cadets at the club racing Herons, Lasers and then sail boards.

Sue and Roddy owned 3 yachts over the years – including an Arpege – La Rochelle, and a Halberdier – Nyopi which they based in the South of France when they retired.

When they lived on Shoreham beach, they set up a flagpole in the back garden, which was used as the starting line for club races.

Sue was always involved in the club as Roddy took on many positions including Commodore.

In their later years they still enjoyed visiting the club on a social basis – chatting at the bar, having lunch once or twice a week and attending dinner dances.
