Autumn Sailing in Sussex: Why Now Could Be the Perfect Time to Try Something New
There is something about autumn that makes you want to do things a little differently.
The summer holidays are over, the evenings are beginning to draw in and suddenly there is an opportunity to think about how you want to spend your time over the months ahead.
Perhaps you have been thinking about taking up a new hobby. Maybe you want to spend more time outdoors, meet new people, learn a practical skill or simply find something that gets you away from the usual routine.
So, have you ever thought about sailing?
At Sussex Yacht Club, autumn sailing in Sussex is far from the end of the season. In many ways, it is the beginning of something new.
Autumn sailing in Sussex: a different way to spend your free time
We often think of sailing as something that belongs to long summer days, warm weather and holidays by the coast.
But the reality is that sailing can be enjoyed throughout the year.
Autumn brings its own character to the water. There is a different atmosphere around the River Adur, the changing light creates beautiful conditions and there is something incredibly rewarding about getting out on the water while the seasons change around you.
And you don't have to own a boat to get involved.
At Sussex Yacht Club, our members take part in a wide range of activities, from keelboat sailing and racing to training, diving, paddle sports and other watersports. The Club also has a busy programme of social events, giving members plenty of ways to get involved both on and off the water.
That means autumn sailing in Sussex can be about much more than learning how to sail. It can be about finding your people, discovering a new part of the coast and having something exciting to look forward to each week.
Looking for a new hobby? Try something that gets you outside
There is a growing appetite for spending free time differently.
Recent UK research found that 38.5% of adults are spending more time outdoors than they were a year ago, while 58% are taking part in some form of social fitness activity.
It is easy to understand why.
There is something refreshing about swapping another evening scrolling on your phone for something that gets you moving, learning and meeting people.
Sailing brings all three together.
You learn practical skills. You work as part of a crew. You spend time outside. You experience the weather and the water rather than simply watching it through a screen. And every time you go sailing, there is something new to learn.
A new hobby doesn't have to mean another gym class. It could mean learning to sail.
You don't need to be an experienced sailor
One of the biggest misconceptions about joining a yacht club is that you need to already know how to sail.
You don't.
Sussex Yacht Club welcomes people who are completely new to boating, with membership open to everybody. There are opportunities to get involved on the water, while the Club's RYA training programme provides a route for beginners who want to learn the fundamentals and build their confidence.
The Club's beginner sailing courses use the Club's Sonar keelboats and are designed for complete beginners as well as those who have already had a taster experience. Training covers everything from helming and crewing to understanding the basics of sailing safely.
So if you have ever stood beside the water and thought "I'd love to give that a go", perhaps this is the year to stop thinking about it and actually try.
More than sailing
Of course, being part of Sussex Yacht Club isn't simply about sailing.
Founded in 1892, the Club has a long history on the Sussex coast, but its community continues to evolve. Today, members can enjoy sailing, racing, training, diving, paddle sports and social activities, alongside the Clubhouse, Stow's Restaurant, Members' Bar and the wider riverside setting.
For some people, joining a yacht club means spending weekends racing.
For others, it might mean learning a new skill.
For someone else, it could be meeting friends for a drink, enjoying dinner overlooking the River Adur, joining a social event or simply becoming part of a community.
There is no single way to enjoy the Club.
You can make membership what you want it to be.
A new Club year begins on 1 October
Autumn is particularly exciting at SYC because 1 October marks the start of our new Club year.
It is a natural point to think about what you would like the next year to look like.
Maybe you want to become more active. Perhaps you want to spend more time outdoors. You might want to learn something completely new, meet people outside your usual circles or find a community that gives you a reason to get out and do more.
Why not make sailing part of that?
The RYA and British Sailing have recently renewed their national Together on Water strategy, with an ambition to connect more people with the water and the benefits of being active on it.
You don't need to have grown up around boats to be part of that future.
You simply need to be curious.
New members: your first drink is on us
If you have been considering joining Sussex Yacht Club, there is still time to take advantage of our September new member offer.
New members joining during September can enjoy their first drink on us, giving you the perfect excuse to come along, explore the Club and start getting to know your new surroundings.
With the new Club year beginning on 1 October, now is a great time to take that first step.
Come and see what the Club is about. Have a drink. Meet some of the people who make SYC what it is. Ask questions about sailing and training. Find out what you could get involved with.
You might arrive thinking you are joining a yacht club.
You might leave having discovered a whole new way to spend your free time.
What could your next year look like?
Imagine spending a crisp autumn morning on the water.
Learning how to handle a boat.
Working alongside a crew.
Heading back to the Club after sailing for a drink.
Meeting friends for dinner.
Trying something you never thought you would.
Then, as the seasons change, finding yourself becoming more confident, more capable and more connected to the community around you.
That is the appeal of autumn sailing in Sussex. It isn't about waiting for next summer. It is about making the most of the seasons you have now.
