Candidate Statement
Candidates are invited to submit a statement of no more than 500 words for circulation to shareholders in the event of an election.
The purpose of the statement is to help members understand:
Why you wish to serve as a Director;
- How you believe you can contribute to the future success of the Club;
- The skills, experience and personal qualities you would bring to the Board;
- A little about yourself and your involvement in and commitment to Sussex Yacht Club;
- Your commitment to acting in the best interests of the Club as a whole; and
- How you meet the requirements set out in the published Director Selection Criteria available on members’ section of the website.
There is no required format and candidates are encouraged to write in their own style and to focus on the contribution they believe they can make to the governance, strategic direction and long-term success of Sussex Yacht Club,
Under the new governance structure, members elect the Board of Directors. Following the AGM, the Directors appoint from amongst their number the Commodore, Vice Commodore, Rear Commodores and other Officers of the Club. Candidates are therefore encouraged to consider not only their suitability to serve as a Director but also whether they may be willing and able, if invited by their fellow Directors, to undertake one of these leadership roles.
The new governance model is designed to promote continuity of purpose and delivery over the longer term, and Directors are therefore expected to support the Club's objects, values and agreed strategic objectives while acting in the best interests of the Club as a whole. Candidates should show a willingness to work collaboratively, exercise sound judgement, communicate effectively, support the staff and contribute positively to collective decision-making.
We encourage members from all parts of the Club and from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences to consider standing for election.
