Saturday 16th July saw the return of the much-loved raft race to the heart of Shoreham.
Organised by club members and staff on behalf of SYC, the event raises much needed money for local charities and is also brings a whole lot of fun to the town centre. As we were uncertain as the position with building the flood wall, we could not include SYC facilities in our planning, therefore the main event was centered around Coronation Green. Music was provided by the fantastic Shoreham Allstars, with refreshments provided by Cloak and Dagger Brewery, and various food stalls. In addition, each of this year’s charities had a stand on the Green.
Our Charities this year were:
St. Barnabas House
St Barnabas House is the hospice for the Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield areas. Specialist care is provided in people’s own homes, as well as in the hospice building in Worthing.
Turning Tides
Turning Tides is the largest provider of homeless services for single people throughout West Sussex.
Sussex Sailability
Sussex Sailability is one of the largest disabled sailing organisations on the south coast, providing opportunities for people with a wide range of physical, sensory and learning disabilities to get involved in and enjoy the sport of sailing.
Herons Dale Primary School
Herons Dale Primary School caters for 130 children with a wide range of additional needs and disabilities.
Activities for the day started with a demonstration by our Outriggers section who dashed up and down the river to the delight of the crowd. As soon as the ide had quietened down, we had Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) races before the main Raft Race event with 21 rafts and more than 100 people on the water.
The SYC team for this year included: –
Russell Morrice Zoe Fry Alan Fry
Tazmin Dixon Ben Coe Kevin Knight
Si Twiddy Dave Lee Si Cooper
Sarah Chapman
Planning for the event started in September last year with the team meeting regularly to update and coordinate the many, many things that must be put in place to run an event like this.
Enough words, I’ll let the pictures do the talking!
