A new chapter for Sussex Yacht Club

At the General Meeting on 9th September shareholders overwhelmingly approved the revised Articles of Association and the Club's new governance framework and associated transition arrangements.

The new Articles introduce a modern governance model designed to support the Club's long-term success while preserving democratic member control. Members will continue to elect the Board of Directors, which will be responsible for governance, strategy, financial stewardship and oversight. Day-to-day management will continue to be delegated appropriately to staff, volunteers and office holders.

The new arrangements establish a new Advisory Group to strengthen member engagement, consultation and communication between the membership and the Board. The revised Articles also introduce clearer governance safeguards, better-defined Director responsibilities helping to strengthen transparency, accountability and good governance across the Club.

This marks an important milestone for the Club. The changes establish a modern governance structure that separates strategic leadership from day-to-day management, strengthens accountability and ensures the Club is well placed to meet future opportunities and challenges.

The next step is the election of the first Board of Directors under the new arrangements.

Nominations will open on 1 October. Eligible shareholders who wish to stand will need:

  • a proposer and seconder;
  • a candidate statement; and
  • a short explanation of how their skills, experience and service align with the published Director criteria.

We encourage members with the commitment, experience and enthusiasm to help shape the Club's future to consider standing for election.

Full details of the election timetable and nomination process will be published shortly.
